On a cold March night I got up at 2:30 am to watch the total lunar eclipse. We observed it as best we could with binoculars through the trees from a window. But at 3:00 I braved the 27° temp and went down to the dock. It was spectacular. In a perfectly cloudless sky a shooting star passed overhead. The ice on the lake was booming (I thought someone was shooting fireworks but then realized it was the normal expansion/contraction of the ice). And the moon looked like a floating orange marble in the sky surrounded by stars. This is the drawing I did of the experience.
I went up to St. Johnsbury in Vermont to experience the total eclipse. Wow! Perfect weather and a wonderful viewing spot. This print shows the eclipse with the "diamond ring" in view. This occurs right before totality. The sky has darkened, the lights in the town have gone on, stars are visible, the temperature just dropped about 10 degrees, and people are awestruck and gasp in unison.
